Headlines That Earn the Rest of the Article

A headline has one job: tell a scanning reader what they will get if they stay.

A reader decides whether to open an article from a handful of words. The headline is that decision, so it should say what the piece is about and why it is worth their time.

Say the subject in plain words

Name the thing the article helps with. "Choosing a font size" tells someone what they will learn. A clever line that hides the subject makes them guess, and most people will not guess.

Promise only what the article delivers

If the headline says five checks, the article should contain five checks. A mismatch sends readers back to the search results, and they remember the site as a place that wasted a click.

Keep it specific

"Make your writing better" could be about anything. "Put the useful idea in the first paragraph" is a headline a reader can accept or skip. Specific headlines attract the people who actually want the article.

Write the headline last, after the draft is done. You will know what the piece really says, and the headline can say that too.
